ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND VETERINARY TREATMENT FACILITY
Bldg 2479, Oakington Street, APG, MD 21005
Phone: 410-278-4604, Fax: 410-278-7369
GENERAL INFORMATION
The APG Veterinary Treatment Facility is not a full-service vet clinic.
Patients are seen by appointment only.
We are not staffed to handle emergencies. Therefore, we suggest that you establish a relationship with a civilian veterinary practice as well.
Please call in prescription refills two (2) days in advance.
We recommend no children under the age of 12 years in the clinic due to limited space and for the safety of the child.
Active duty service members, dependents and retirees are eligible to use the VTF.
All pets residing on Post must be microchipped per APG Policy.
ATTENTION VETERINARY TREATMENT FACILITY CLIENTS
Due to unforeseen staffing shortages we will be unable to make any additional appointments with a veterinarian until further notice. We will still be able to offer limited technician services, to include:
Sale of flea/tick and heartworm preventive medication with a current prescription
Sale of over-the-counter items not requiring a prescription
Perform fecals and administer dewormers
Microchip implantation
Pet registration and check-out
Nail trims
Anal gland expression
Draw blood for FAVN (rabies titers) for those preparing for a PCS move
Feline ear mite testing and medication
Perform heartworm (4X SNAP) testing *
We are happy to help with the preparation of any paperwork for a PCS move; however, we are unable to make an appointment for the physical examination that will be required for a health certificate
* At this time we are able to offer heartworm tests; however, in the event that any result is not unmistakably negative, we are unable to interpret the results without a veterinarian present. We will be unable to sell heartworm preventive for any animal that does not have a negative test. Re-testing must be done at a later date here, at the owner’s expense; or we will refer you to a civilian veterinarian for re-testing at the owner’s expense.

SERVICES
Since the veterinary mission encompasses duties beyond the treatment of privately owned dogs and cats, the clinic hours are limited. Authorized services are vaccinations, health certificates and the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of zoonotic diseases (diseases transferred from animals to humans), to include fecal exams and heartworm checks.
The Post veterinarian treats minor ear, eye and skin problems on an outpatient basis. Other conditions, and those requiring surgery or x-rays, will be referred to a civilian veterinarian of the owner's choice. We recommend that you establish a relationship with a civilian vet, since we are not a full-service clinic.
ANIMAL REGISTRATION
Animal owners who reside on Post must register their dogs and cats at the VTF within 10 days of arrival. Proof of rabies vaccination must be presented at this time, and all cats and dogs must be micro-chipped. By APG Post regulations and Maryland state law, all cats and dogs over four months of age are required to be vaccinated against rabies.
EXOTIC ANIMALS
Introduction of animals other than domestic dogs and cats, small birds and small rodents are prohibited. Requests for exceptions to this policy may be submitted in writing through the Post veterinarian to the Commander, USAF APG.
STRAYS
Pets must be leashed and under the direct control of the owner when outdoors. However, it is understood that animals may inadvertently escape from time to time. Stray animals are picked up by Harford County Animal Control and taken to the Humane Society of Harford County, located in Fallston. The Humane Society requires proof of vaccinations and some form of proof of ownership prior to releasing animals from their facilities. They also charge a fee for the impoundment and any additional days the animals are there.
To get more information you can call the Humane Society at 410-836-1090.
To have a stray animal picked up, please call Harford County Animal Control at 410-638-3505.
ANIMAL BITES
Regulations dictate that if a pet bites a person on APG, that animal must be subject to a quarantine determined by the Post veterinarian. If a stray or wild animal bites a person, it needs to be reported immediately. If your animal has bitten someone or if a stray or wild animal has bitten your pet or a person, contact the VTF as soon as possible after the incident.
PCSing WITH YOUR PET
Shipment of animals within the U.S. or overseas is usually an uneventful task if arrangements are made in advance. As a general rule, if all vaccinations have been given greater than 30 days but not more than one (1) year prior to departure, they have an AVID ISO or Home Again Microchip, and if a health certificate is issued within 10 days of shipment, then requirements have been accomplished for most, though not all, countries and states. Some countries and states require a FAVN blood test months in advance. If you plan on processing overseas or the possibility exists, you should begin planning one (1) year prior to arriving at the OCONUS station. Please check the requirements for your destination well in advance.

We also offer flea and tick prevention, heartworm medications, and various shampoos. Appointments for shots and heartworm test will be with a technician, unless you request to see the Veterinarian.
