OPERATION MILITARY KIDS

Middle School M Squads
Several mentoring groups exist in our Harford County Public Schools, Aberdeen and Edgewood Schools particularly, thanks to Partners in Education. The "M-Squad", formerly known as the "APG Kids", provides support for military children of Aberdeen Middle School whose family members are deployed. We have even included students who just need the military focused peer support. This group of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students get together to emotionally shore up each other, and share information about their loved ones. Led by the AMS 6th grade Counselor, they have shared group and individual activities to build and strengthen the group. They used these activities to put together daily survival skills in lives apart from those close to them (who are deployed in a combat or high-risk assignment). As an activity of patriotic support, they have sent banners of appreciation to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was also this group's pleasure to participate in the Wall of Honor, now the Showcase of Honor, where the names of the deployed are displayed. Last spring the M-Squad created wall posters to publicize the group for this new school year and took a trip to hear Dr. Ben Carson, neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center. If anyone would like to participate, join or know someone who would like to get involved, please contact the Aberdeen Middle School at 410-273-5510.

New High School Grad. Requirements
The 2005 Harford County Public Schools Comprehensive Secondary School Reform Plan will require students that graduate in June 2009 and later to earn 26 graduation credits. The new flexible eight-period day, also called the block schedule, allows students 32 credit opportunities. Prior to this, students graduated with only 21 credits. The five additional credits include one more mathematics credit and four credits in the Career Pathways system. Beginning in ninth grade, all students complete the Living in a Contemporary World course, which will be followed by career cluster courses to help them better understand their interests and aptitudes. "The ultimate goal of the Comprehensive Secondary School Reform Plan is to promote student success, as measured by increased scores on high school assessments, an increased attendance rate, an increased graduation rate, a decreased drop-out rate, and issues related to a safe and secure learning environment."

Students must earn passing scores on the following Maryland High School Assessments: English (396), Algebra/Data Analysis (412), Biology (400), and Government (394); or meet the total combined score option (1,602).

GEMS
2010 GEMS Program
an Army Educational Outreach Program

Gains in the Education of Math & Science (GEMS) is getting ready for the start of it's 5th year at APG in the Summer of 2010. GEMS is an in-depth laboratory-based experience for students who will be in grades 7 (by Fall 2010) - 10 (in Spring 2010) that is held at the US Army Research Laboratory on Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. Older students in grades 11-12 will be considered provided that they have not participated previously. Students must commit to participating in the entire week - there are 4 weeks to choose from (June 21-25; July 12-16; July 26-30; and August 9-13, 2010). Detailed information on GEMS can be found at the US Army Educational Outreach Web site (http://www.usaeop.com) and applications will ONLY be taken through the web site - click on 'Apply Now' and choose 'APG' as the site. Students are required to write a short essay about why they want to attend. Students who are military dependents should make note of that on their application. Applications will only be accepted from February 1 - March 15, 2010. Applying to the program does not guarantee admission. Applicants should receive notification by the end of April whether they were admitted into the 2010 program.
