 OPERATION MILITARY KIDS
|
Partners
|
Middle School M Squads
Several mentoring groups exist in our Harford County Public Schools, Aberdeen and Edgewood Schools particularly, thanks to Partners in Education. The "M-Squad", formerly known as the "APG Kids", provides support for military children of Aberdeen Middle School whose family members are deployed. We have even included students who just need the military focused peer support. This group of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students get together to emotionally shore up each other, and share information about their loved ones. Led by the AMS 6th grade Counselor, they have shared group and individual activities to build and strengthen the group. They used these activities to put together daily survival skills in lives apart from those close to them (who are deployed in a combat or high-risk assignment). As an activity of patriotic support, they have sent banners of appreciation to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was also this group's pleasure to participate in the Wall of Honor, now the Showcase of Honor, where the names of the deployed are displayed. Last spring the M-Squad created wall posters to publicize the group for this new school year and took a trip to hear Dr. Ben Carson, neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center. If anyone would like to participate, join or know someone who would like to get involved, please contact the Aberdeen Middle School at 410-273-5510.

New High School Grad. Requirements
The 2005 Harford County Public Schools Comprehensive Secondary School Reform Plan will require students that graduate in June 2009 and later to earn 26 graduation credits. The new flexible eight-period day, also called the block schedule, allows students 32 credit opportunities. Prior to this, students graduated with only 21 credits. The five additional credits include one more mathematics credit and four credits in the Career Pathways system. Beginning in ninth grade, all students complete the Living in a Contemporary World course, which will be followed by career cluster courses to help them better understand their interests and aptitudes. "The ultimate goal of the Comprehensive Secondary School Reform Plan is to promote student success, as measured by increased scores on high school assessments, an increased attendance rate, an increased graduation rate, a decreased drop-out rate, and issues related to a safe and secure learning environment."

Students must earn passing scores on the following Maryland High School Assessments: English (396), Algebra/Data Analysis (412), Biology (400), and Government (394); or meet the total combined score option (1,602).

Aberdeen Middle: More Than You Think!
by Marianne Handlir, along with Taryn Martin
Maybe I am a bit biased. My son attends Aberdeen Middle, I volunteer consistently, and I am the PTA President for this school year. But like many residents of Harford County, I had heard the woes from gossipers about Aberdeen Middle. And to those people I say, "Have you ever visited the school personally? Then maybe you should!" That way you will see first hand the dedication of the teachers, the tenacity of the staff, and nature of the students.
Believe me when I say that I was overcome with joy when I met Principal Chandra Krantz. Mrs. Krantz cares about the children and their community and whether each flourish together for the good of every student. Her dedication has run down through every teacher and staff member. From the wonderful vice principals; each one dedicated to their own grade level; down to the janitorial staff. These people are all amazing!
Aberdeen Middle's motto is "Believe It, Achieve It!" This is shown throughout the many programs offered for the diverse selection of students that attend Aberdeen Middle. There are programs for the young men; children of military parents and those children who want to make an impact in their community.
Last year was full of opportunities, as will this year present. One lucky 7th grader had Baltimore Ravens’ #86 Todd Heap visit the school. He talked to the kids about the importance of physical activity, he left goodies for the students and staff, and, along with a grant from JC Penney, Aberdeen Middle was able to purchase much needed equipment for the gym.
Then came the Winter Bazaar filled with family fun for all! Student movie nights were a big hit! Students were admitted with a few earned Eagle Bills. Eagle Bills were initiated by a new program; P.B.I.S. – Positive Behavior Intervention System. This program allows for teachers and staff to reward good behavior in their students. Students may use these Eagle Bills for events or to make purchases in the school store.
Aberdeen Middle has a strong PTA and parent involvement. This year’s membership had exceeded last year’s within the first 3 weeks of school! Working together with the PTA and parent volunteers, the school has many opportunities to serve the student population. There is a Basket Bingo to support the production of the bi-annual student publication The Talon, flea market, and community health fair and daily opportunities.
Along with her new administrative team, last year continuing this year, Mrs. Krantz has focused on the positive aspects of all her students, and it’s seen in every classroom. Now kids will be kids, but the level of peace and respect is growing daily at Aberdeen Middle.
So to those cynics we say again, "Have you visited Aberdeen Middle lately?"
