Middle School M Squads
Several mentoring groups exist in our Harford County Public Schools, Aberdeen and Edgewood Schools particularly, thanks to Partners in Education. The "M-Squad", formerly known as the "APG Kids", provides support for military children of Aberdeen Middle School whose family members are deployed. We have even included students who just need the military focused peer support. This group of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students get together to emotionally shore up each other, and share information about their loved ones. Led by the AMS 7th grade Counselor, they have shared group and individual activities to build and strengthen the group. They used these activities to put together daily survival skills in lives apart from those close to them (who are deployed in a combat or high-risk assignment). As an activity of patriotic support, they have sent banners of appreciation to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was also this group's pleasure to participate in the Wall of Honor, now the Showcase of Honor, where the names of the deployed are displayed. Last spring the M-Squad created wall posters to publicize the group for this new school year and took a trip to hear Dr. Ben Carson, neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center. If anyone would like to participate, join or know someone who would like to get involved, please contact the Aberdeen Middle School at 410-273-5510.

SCHOOL LIAISON
NEW HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
The 2005 Harford County Public Schools Comprehensive Secondary School Reform Plan will require students that graduate in June 2009 and later to earn 26 graduation credits. The new flexible eight-period day, also called the block schedule, allows students 32 credit opportunities. Prior to this, students graduated with only 21 credits. The five additional credits include one more mathematics credit and four credits in the Career Pathways system. Beginning in ninth grade, all students complete the Living in a Contemporary World course, which will be followed by career cluster courses to help them better understand their interests and aptitudes. "The ultimate goal of the Comprehensive Secondary School Reform Plan is to promote student success, as measured by increased scores on high school assessments, an increased attendance rate, an increased graduation rate, a decreased drop-out rate, and issues related to a safe and secure learning environment."

GAINS IN THE EDUCATION OF MATHEMATICS & SCIENCE Looking for Local Student Applicants
(http://www.usaeop.com/programs/GEMS/)

Students in 8th to 12th grades spend one to four weeks in an Army lab performing experiments. Advanced courses in subsequent years build upon prior years' experience.
Senior high school and college students, with the help of a full-time program administrator and a resident teacher for the summer, establish novel one- to four-week programs for each summer, wherein younger junior / senior high students perform short experiments illustrating basic scientific principles.
In the 2008 GEMS Program, students will work on making samples, using samples in applications (amplifiers, batteries, coatings on panels) and using instrumentation to examine the interaction of radiation and matter as well as other phenomena. Students will do hands-on experiments, including the preparation of samples (conjugated polymers, coatings, etc). In subsequent sessions during the week, students will use instrumentation (FTIR, UV-Vis, calorimetry, etc) to analyze the materials they prepared. Students will work with scientists from ARLs Weapons & Materials Research Directorate and Computational and Information Sciences Directorate.
